The Hobbit

Bilbo Baggins, a peace-loving hobbit, finds his comfortable life upended by the wizard Gandalf's visit. Gandalf orchestrates the arrival of thirteen dwarves, who unveil their quest to reclaim their ancestral mountain kingdom and treasure from the dragon Smaug. Initially resistant, Bilbo's latent adventurous streak is awakened, prompting him to reluctantly join the company as their "burglar." This sets the stage for his extraordinary journey.

The company's journey quickly faces peril. They encounter three trolls who capture them, but Gandalf's cunning saves them by tricking the trolls into turning to stone. Later, sheltering in a cave in the Misty Mountains, they are captured by goblins. Gandalf intervenes again, slaying the Great Goblin, but in the frantic escape, Bilbo becomes separated from the group.

Alone in the darkness, Bilbo discovers a small metal ring and encounters the creature Gollum. They engage in a game of riddles, which Bilbo wins by asking about the object in his pocket. Gollum, realizing his prized magic ring of invisibility is gone, becomes enraged. Bilbo accidentally slips on the ring, discovers its power, and uses it to evade Gollum and escape the goblin tunnels.

Bilbo, now reunited with the dwarves and Gandalf, keeps his new magic ring a secret. They soon face another threat: a pack of howling Wargs. The company escapes into trees, where Gandalf uses fire magic. They are then rescued by the Lord of the Eagles, who carries them to safety. Later, they find refuge with Beorn, a powerful skin-changer, who provides crucial aid and warns them about Mirkwood.

The journey through Mirkwood is fraught with hunger, thirst, and enchantment. Despite Gandalf's warnings, the dwarves stray from the path, leading to their capture by giant spiders. Bilbo, using his invisibility ring, bravely fights and rescues them. However, the dwarves are subsequently captured by the Elvenking and imprisoned in his underground palace for refusing to reveal their quest.

Bilbo engineers a daring escape from the Elvenking's dungeons by hiding the dwarves in empty barrels, floating them downriver. They arrive, bruised and exhausted, at Lake-town, where Thorin declares his royal heritage. The townspeople, hopeful for revived prophecies, welcome them. Equipped with supplies, the company finally reaches the desolate foothills of the Lonely Mountain, their ultimate destination.

Upon reaching the Lonely Mountain, the company struggles to find the secret entrance. Bilbo eventually deciphers the map's riddle, revealing a hidden door. He ventures alone into Smaug's lair, stealing a gold cup, which infuriates the dragon. During a second visit, Bilbo cleverly uses riddles to discover Smaug's vulnerable unarmored patch. This crucial information is key to their strategy against the fearsome beast.

News of Smaug's death reaches the company, along with the approach of armies of men and elves seeking a share of the treasure. Thorin refuses, summoning his cousin Dáin. Bilbo secretly delivers the Arkenstone to Bard and the Elvenking to avert war. A massive army of goblins and Wargs then arrives, forcing the dwarves, men, and elves to unite in the Battle of Five Armies. Just as defeat seems imminent, the Great Eagles and Beorn arrive, turning the tide.

Following the battle, a dying Thorin reconciles with Bilbo. Dáin is crowned King, and the treasure is peacefully distributed. Bilbo, with a modest share, begins his long journey home with Gandalf and Beorn. Upon reaching the Shire, he finds himself presumed dead and his belongings being auctioned. Though he loses his "respectable" reputation, Bilbo remains content, enjoying his quiet life, writing memoirs, and occasionally using his magic ring.
